Desk Rehab
After
In desperate need of a work space I searched Craigslist for a cheap desk, preferably a drafting table. My husband found one for $20 bucks in Farmers Branch that looked promising. After a drive with the family in tow to a cat infested house we came back with this little gem.
Before
It wasn't much to look at but it could be used for the many messy art projects I am always undertaking as an art teacher and mom to a spunky toddler. My husband was so relieved at my suggestion of organization. I think he thought this would solve the problem of me taking over the kitchen table and all other available counter spaces. Poor guy! The problem I was having with the new desk is that it was so drab I couldn't get inspired to sit down at it. The childhood graffiti scrawled on the side didn't help much, it just made me feel like I was back in 6th grade. So, I came across an article in some magazine, either Martha Stewart or that ridiculous Family Circle magazine that somehow always ends up at my house. ( I will never admit to buying it) A crafty lady from New Orleans had decoupaged a tray table with pretty wrapping paper. This could be the answer and inspire me to want to use my new desk! I made this project happen in two short sessions over two days. It was actually done during my daughters nap times so I would say it was a success.

It is not perfect but it brightens up my room and my mood. A little sanding, paint, and Mod Podge glue was all it took. I finished it off with a clear acrylic coating that should protect it from spills, paint, or whatever else comes its way. The red paint spots are hand prints (placed there on purpose) of my little one. I hope I will use this desk for a long time and will remember how baby sweet and little she was with those tiny hands. If anyone wants the specific instructions let me know, I would be happy to share!
